Homeless Program

ODE has Non-Regulatory Guidelines for hurricane disaster families.  For McKinney-Vento help with this issue, see B6 on page 11.  Good information if districts run into this.

We have identified the Region 2 (Lorain, Erie & Huron Counties) Homeless Program as having 3 areas of concern. These 3 areas are briefly explained below.
1.  School District Homeless Liaison Training

The annual Homeless Liaison Training Breakfast Meeting focuses on McKinney-Vento Law and Data reporting.  All districts in Lorain, Erie & Huron Counties are requested to send their Homeless Education Liaison and EMIS Coordinator. This is open to all who register to attend so agencies, organizations and social service personnel are also encouraged to attend.

DATE:  September 21, 2017
TIME:   8:00 - Sign in and enjoy a continental breakfast
             8:30 - 11:00 - Training
PLACE:   Education Service Center of Lorain County, 1885 Lake Ave., Elyria, 44035

If you cannot access the Registration link above or have questions about this training, please contact Debbie Hunt at  440-324-3178 ext. 1153.
Data Reporting:
You may now begin to collect data to fill-out the required Data Collection Form for your school district; we use this form to summarize data for all of Region 2 SST.
Please fill it out by August 1, 2017. This data is required from all school districts in Ohio but because we (Region 2 - Lorain, Erie & Huron Counties) have a McKinney-Vento Grant, that data gets sent to Debbie Hunt (Region 2 Homeless Education Liaison) for compilation rather than sending it directly to Susannah Wayland, 614-466-4161 at ODE.
2. Tutoring for Homeless Students in Shelters
The Homeless Instructional Support Tutoring Program provides students in shelters and agency programs with tutors to assist with homework, help with school costs of homeless families, facilitate pupil transportation, etc. To determine eligibility for services or further inquiries, contact Jody Weidrick

3. McKinney-Vento Program
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Program was designed to make sure all homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free and appropriate public education as children and youth who are not homeless. This includes preschool education.  All barriers to to enrollment, attendance and success in school that homeless children and youth may experience need to be removed.
