As the SLP Regional Speech-Language Supervisor through the Educational Service Center of Lorain County (ESCLC), Barb Conrad serves the SLP needs of participating school districts in Lorain, Erie and Huron Counties.
Both supervision of and consultation for speech and language pathologists in the Northern Ohio Region are provided by the speech and language supervisor, in addition to technical assistance and connectivity to current changes in the field of school based speech and language services.
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) meet in small regional groups with the supervisor tri-annually. Monthly e-packets provide current local, state, and national updates as well as tips on service delivery, caseload management, fun activities and classroom connections. Electronic mail is used frequently to relay updates and/or immediate information to SLPs on the listserv coordinated through the supervisor.
Workshops are offered specifically for all speech-language pathologists in the region. Topics are chosen from suggestions from the SLPs and/or current happenings in the field of speech and language and/or special education.
Monthly supervision of first year SLPs and those undergoing their clinical fellowship year are provided. New SLPs meet with the supervisor for additional trainings on paperwork requirements, problem solving first year difficulties, certification and licensure requirements, etc.
Language Activity Boxes (Project L.A.B.) developed and directed under the leadership of the supervisor are shared amongst the SLPs in the region on a four week loan period. The boxes contain materials (books, stamps, toys, games, etc) designed to enhance the development of speech and language goals of most children receiving speech and language therapy in the region and to coordinate with the general education curriculum.
The speech and language supervisor is closely connected with the school-based organization for SLPs called the Ohio School Speech Pathology and Education Audiology Coalition (OSSPEAC), the State Speech-Language Supervisory and Audiology Network and the Ohio Master's Network Initiative in Education (OMNIE).
