8:30-11:00 What are executive functions, how do they impact children and adolescents, and how can we support students whose executive functions are impaired? Heather Harris Freiberg, M.Ed., M.S.

“Executive functions” can be broadly defined as a set of cognitive skills which support children, adolescents, and adults in exercising self control. When executive functions are weak or impaired, it may be evident in disorganization of time or materials, in disregulated behavior, or in learning or performance deficits. When supporting students with special education or therapy, it is crucial that professionals consider executive skills. In addition to clearly defining and describing executive functions, methods for observing, and addressing executive function weaknesses will be discussed during this workshop. Extended resources for future reference were also be made available.

Objectives:

· Understand the five primary elements of Russell Barkley’s model of executive functioning

· Describe the symptomology of weak executive skills

· Explore how weak or impaired executive skills negatively impact student behavior, social functioning, learning of new skills, and performance
