Project Overview
This project is fundamentally focused on change processes in district-level education systems that lead to improved achievement for students with disabilities. Many districts around the state of Ohio have struggled to reach high levels of proficiency among students with disabilities, but a small percentage achieved steady improvement between 2004 and 2008. The Universal Education Project was designed to identify district-level strategies and practices among these schools that led to consistent improvement in math and reading proficiency test scores for students with identified disabilities. Because every district participating in this study described the importance of breaking down barriers between special and regular education, this report is titled Universal Education in an effort to unify two previously separate cultures into a single, high-impact education for all students.

DVD Resources:
The Power of 2 (Second Edition) This program, hosted by Dr. Marilyn Friend, provides a comprehensive overview of co-teaching and its implications for inclusion settings. The DVD runs for more than 60 minutes, with most of that time designated to explaining the five essential components of co-teaching. The fourth component, Classroom Practice, is detailed in almost 30 minutes and actual co-teaching footage is provided.
More Power! The second of the DVD series about co-teaching allows Dr. Marilyn Friend to build upon the foundation described in her first DVD [see description above]. Approaching three hours in length, More Power! focuses on effective instructional practice in co-teaching classrooms. Dr. Friend identifies and describes seven dimensions of best practice in co-teaching settings. The DVD's classroom footage brings these dimensions to life!
Releasing the Power! This third DVD of the co-teaching series presents the experiences of district and school site administrators. Officials from the Charlotte-Mecklenberg School District (North Carolina) are tapped for their successes, challenges, and lessons learned in crafting a district-wide approach to co-teaching for student success. District and school leaders will be especially interested in viewing this DVD as they consider, plan, or trouble-shoot co-teaching practices in their own settings.
