Gifted/Talented Program

About the Gifted Consortium

September 23, 2008

The Lorain County Consortium for Gifted, which has as its fiscal agent the Educational  Service Center of  Lorain County, is responsible for the planning, implementation, ongoing development and evaluation of differentiated programs and services for identified gifted students in Lorain County. The majority of the districts in Lorain County receive gifted services from the Consortium.

Two supervisors of gifted offer continual support to teachers and administrators. Monthly consortium meetings for gifted teachers provide inservice, sharing opportunities and updated/current information in gifted education. A third supervisor offers support services and organizes special events for the gifted students in four high schools.

The special events/programs for students are a key feature of the consortium’s services. These programs exist as an exciting, appropriate and rewarding end product of many dedicated hours of learning, planning, and work in various classroom settings.

FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS

All Children learn at different depths and rates.  Children who are identified as gifted by virtue of outstanding abilities in the cognitive and academic areas learn at a rate much faster than others.  To be continuous learners, our gifted children need differentiated educational programs and services beyond those normally provided by the regular school program.

Curriculum should provide the flexibility to address the breadth, depth, pace, and demand of learning in the gifted classroom and in the regular  classroom.  Through using the techniques of differentiation and ascending intellectual demand, emphasis should be placed on developing higher levels of thinking.
