OHIO DYSLEXIA COMMITTEE

   ORC 3323.25 requires the Ohio Department of Education to establish the Ohio Dyslexia Committee. Seven members of this committee will be appointed by the state superintendent of public instruction and one member is appointed by the chancellor of higher education, including:
    A school district superintendent;
    An elementary school principal;
    A classroom teacher with appropriate certification* and at least two years of experience teaching in a multi-sensory structured literacy program;
    An educational service center employee with appropriate certification;*
    An employee of the Ohio Department of Education;
    A school psychologist;
    A reading intervention specialist with appropriate certification;*
    An individual with experience in higher education and teacher preparation programs with appropriate certification* appointed by the chancellor of higher education.

It is the purpose of the Ohio Dyslexia Committee (the Committee) to develop a guidebook regarding the best practices and methods for universal screening, intervention, and remediation for children with dyslexia or children displaying dyslexic characteristics and tendencies using a multi-sensory structured literacy program.

 
 * Appropriate certification means certification at a certified level, or higher, from a research-based, multi-sensory structured literacy program (Ohio Revised Code 3323.25(A)(2)(a)).
 
Olivia's Bio
Olivia Weisman has over 17 years of experience in education as an intervention specialist, literacy coach, and literacy consultant.  Mrs. Weisman is a Certified Academic Language Therapist through The Academic Language Therapy Association and has extensive knowledge and experience in teaching students and adults, specifically those with dyslexia, how to read, spell, and write through multisensory strategies.  She currently serves as a literacy specialist with ESC of Lorain County, is a member of the International Dyslexia Association, and as a Local Certified of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Independent Consultant. She is a proud mother of three boys that keep her on her toes.
