Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. It is a posture of the heart that shows up in how you live, lead, and listen. Now more than ever, educators/leaders need the skills and capacity to thrive in highly multicultural contexts. In this Master Class, you will be challenged to develop culturally relevant ways to lead yourself and authentically connect with those you have been called to serve.

In this Master Class, you will learn why culturally humble leaders lead with their hearts and are effective in cultivating authentic relationships. This class will demonstrate some of the core qualities found in culturally humble and responsive school leaders…things like cultural wisdom, emotional intelligence, centering students’ voices, and empathetic listening.

This Master Class will focus on three areas:

 1. Deepening Self-Awareness

Acknowledging our personal strengths, limitations, and values enables us to develop an understanding of who we are as individuals. In doing so, we gain insight on the abilities we already possess as well as the abilities we may be able to attain as we develop our leadership potential.

 2. Mitigating Power Imbalances

Power is often a difficult subject to discuss. However, acknowledging the complex dynamics of power and agency is critical when engaging with diverse communities. This awareness is vital in helping leaders recognize whose voices and needs are being considered and what we can do to incorporate those that are not.

 3. Building reciprocal partnership

Successful engagement with communities goes beyond the individual self. We cannot individually commit to self-evaluation and addressing power imbalances without engaging in collaborative, reciprocal practices that respect and value the knowledge, perspective, and resources shared among individuals and communities.
