Gifted Mock Trial simulates an actual courtroom trial as students play key roles, such as lawyers, witnesses, jurors, and bailiffs. Characters come to life through the students’ role playing which includes immersion in all aspects of the legal process. One of the highlights of Mock Trial is that actual judges and lawyers from the community preside over the trials. Not only do they act as judges, but also as instructors as they explain aspects of the trial. This program addresses the Language Arts and Social Studies State Standards, the higher levels of thinking and many of the gifted processes of critical thinking, creative thinking and communication skills. In preparation for Mock Trial, the Gifted Consortium partners with local attorneys to host classroom workshops. Students are enthusiastic to learn about trial proceedings and courtroom protocol from these legal professionals.
