ZOOM SERIES:  SEPT 11 | SEPT 25 | OCT 9 | OCT 23

Audience: K-12 Teachers and Administrators

The Knowledge Gap tells the story of education's deeply ingrained habit to focus on teaching reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge, and describes the rewards when teachers and schools focus on building students' knowledge and vocabulary.   The history and research offered by Natalie Wexler in The Knowledge Gap aligns to the Science of Reading and offers readers an opportunity to reimagine how to engage students by tapping into their interests and reconnect with science and social studies content.
Alice and Olivia will facilitate conversations around the content of each chapter, and engage you in thinking about how you can make small shifts to enhance your instruction.

Participants will…
- Develop an understanding of what is meant by “the knowledge gap”
- Develop a common understanding of metacognitive strategies to support reading
  comprehension
- Reflect upon current teaching practices
- Identify ways to shift instruction to support building background knowledge and vocabulary to
  support all learners

We will have 4-hour long Zoom meetings (4-5pm) to facilitate discussions regarding chapters and assignments from the text:
SEPT 11 - Chapters 1-3
SEPT 25 - Chapters 4-6
OCT 9 - Chapters 7-10
