Creativity is a highly valued 21st century skill, but what do we know about how to foster it in children? Is it the same in both children and adults? What does the latest research tell us about how to help create cultures of creativity? How can we even define it? We will explore these and other questions through a series of anecdotes and hands-on activities that illustrate and model key creativity-producing instructional strategies. An emphasis will be placed on understanding the nature of creativity and how it manifests itself in the lives of adults, with application of that information to how children learn, both in and outside of school. The latest research and thinking on creativity and innovation will be emphasized throughout the talk. Participants should bring at least one of their lesson plans or activities, which we will examine and tinker with during the session to refocus it creatively.

Jonathan Plucker is a Professor of Education and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Education. His research examines education policy, talent development, and creativity. Recent books include the 2nd edition of Creativity and Innovation, 3rd edition of Critical Issues and Practices in Gifted Education with Carolyn Callahan, and Excellence Gaps in Education with Scott Peters. He is an APA, APS, AERA, and AAAS Fellow, and a recipient of the Arnheim Award for Outstanding Achievement from APA and of the Distinguished Scholar Award from NAGC. He graduated with a B.S. in chemistry education and M.A. in educational psychology from the University of Connecticut. After briefly teaching at an elementary school in New York, he received his Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Virginia.

Participants will be invited to (2) one hour follow-up sessions via ZOOM to ask questions that may come up once they've had time to process and implement some of the strategies presented.
