Providing Effective and Engaging Instruction for Today’s Adolescent Learners

Target Audience: Grades 4-12 ELA, math, science, and history teachers, administrators, intervention specialists, & literacy coaches
This 3-day training series is designed for all educators of adolescent learners (grades 4-12), and will provide examples for math, history, science, & ELA content-areas.

Description:
Day 1 - FEB 28: Complex Texts for All: How to Make it Work
Participants will delve into how students create a mental model when they encounter text, and how teachers can use that knowledge to plan effective comprehension instruction for all students.  Topics covered will include:
- Developing scaffolds to support all learners in accessing complex texts
- Creating text sets
- Designing text-dependent questions
- Developing comprehensive lesson plans with effective before, during and after reading strategies

Day 2 - MAR 23: Academic Vocabulary: Boosting Students’ Mental Dictionaries
Participants will engage in activities and conversations to understand how to incorporate effective vocabulary strategies that will get adolescent learners immersed in reading, writing and speaking academic language.  Topics covered will include:
- Selecting words for vocabulary instruction
- Teaching individual words
- Using morphology as an independent word learning strategy

Day 3 - MAY 2: Disciplinary Literacy: Reading, Writing, Thinking & Discussing as a Disciplinary Expert
Participants will dive into how experts in the field read, write, think, and discuss in different disciplines, and how this can be incorporated into the classroom .  Topics covered will include:
- Developing an understanding of disciplinary literacy
- Establishing how disciplinary literacy differs from content-area literacy
- Exploring disciplinary literacy strategies in math, history, ELA, and science

EVENTS REQUIRING A REGISTRATION FEE:  We must receive your cancellation in writing by emailing [email protected] at least two weeks prior to the event date for a full refund. If you do not cancel or are a no-show, you/your district will be invoiced the full event fee.

EVENTS WITH NO REGISTRATION FEE:   We must receive your cancellation in writing by emailing [email protected] at least 24 hours prior to the event.  If you do not cancel or are a no-show, you/your district will be invoiced a $25 registration fee since our presenters prepare their presentation and may charge an event/planning fee.

In the case of an emergency or situations out of the ordinary, registrations are transferable to another colleague.
