School discipline and classroom management challenges continue (or are expanding) in schools today, as related to students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. And yet, many school discipline approaches focus more on responding to—rather than preventing—these issues.
Ultimately, “prevention” should focus on enhancing students' interpersonal, social problem-solving, conflict prevention and resolution, and emotional control, communication, and coping (i.e., self-management) skills.
Focused on administrators and school leadership teams, this presentation describes evidence-based, multi-tiered social-emotional learning/positive behavioral support system (SEL/PBSS) student, staff, school components and activities. This system integrates school safety and discipline, classroom management and engagement, and student self-management. . . also factoring in issues of equity and disproportionality relative to students of color and with disabilities.
